First Things First
It seems to me that the first post on my blog should reflect what is most important to me. As a result putting first things first must set the priority of life. Jesus stated that "The first will be last and the last first." This is the end of 2007, the last. It is my first entry to my blog. Putting Jesus first in all of life drives what I want to be as a man, a follower of Jesus, a husband, father, friend, and leader. I am interested in what other leaders and authors are saying and how the principles they have discovered have aided them in becoming success and effective in life and ministry. The ideas they share provide helpful insight for those of us who read and investigate their thoughts. However, the Word of God is the beginning and end of truth and everything that others share must be measured against the Scripture for both content and methodology. My journey of life and ministry have been grounded in this truth. With the proliferation of information in our world and our ability to have easy access to knowledge through the internet, many seem to be following the pattern of the Athenians who "spent their time doing nothing but talking about and listening to the latest ideas" (Acts 17:21 NIV). There is no lack of knowledge in the Church today. There is, however, a lack of the power of the Spirit. My prayer is that followers of Jesus will put first things first in 2008 and make their priority the Word of God and prayer to the Father. That is my personal commitment and greatest desire.

I couldn't agree more with your comment about knowledge vs. power. In an act unbecoming to me, I picked up an old classic by Watchman Nee this morning on "Spiritual Authority." He writes, "...he who walks after reason and sight goes the way of reason; only he who obeys authority enters Canaan by faith. None who follow reason can walk the spiritual pathway, because it is beyond and above human reasoning."
His basic thesis is that spiritual power for service flows from delegated authority, and only complete obedience to authority "can shut Hades' gates and release life" (p. 37).
The longer I'm in this "pastoring" thing, the more I realize that while all the leadership, marketing, strategic planning, and other models I've studies are good, they do not release life.
Last night, during our week of prayer, we prayed over 1374 homes, from a mailing we are doing for an upcoming sermon series in February titled, "Love & Marriage." We simply prayed for the release of Christ's live upon these homes. More than anything, both our communities and ourselves, personally, need to hear the Word of God from the voice of God as you stated.
Thanks for leading the way!
